family psychologist on the Gold Coast

Caring for children and adolescents can be wonderfully rewarding. However it can also be difficult and exhausting. It is very common to feel overwhelmed, and ill-equipped to deal with the demands of the task, especially if your child has underlying issues such as autism, ADHD, anxiety or depression that impact on their behaviour.

Helping you understand your child’s condition

Using psychological assessment tools or the insights we have gained in therapy, we help you understand why things are the way they are and separate your love of your child from the constraints their condition.

Building stronger connection

Often, if a child has been behaving in a disruptive way, you have been on the receiving end of a lot of negative messages about their behaviour. This can erode your confidence in your parenting and create a well of frustration and resentment that interferes with the connection you have with your child.

We arm you with tools to counter the negative and help you re-connect so you can once again focus on nurturing the positives in your child.

How we help

We offer individual psychological support to adults experiencing stress, anxiety, and sadness as a result of parenting and family relationship difficulties. We also help adults whose parenting journey is made more complex by their own mental health concerns.

Parents:

  • Self-care and coping skills
  • Problem solving
  • Advice on development and ‘normal’ behaviour
  • Addressing challenging behaviours
  • Parenting anxious children
  • Relationship and attachment difficulties
  • Parenting through separation
  • Single parenting
  • Blended families
  • Addiction
  • Family conflict and violence

Older adults carers

When parents are unable to raise their children, grandparents are often the first to step in. Raising a second generation brings many rewards, like the satisfaction of providing grandchildren with a secure home, and the deepening of relationships.
Taking on this role, however, also comes with the challenge of dealing with children’s complex emotions and managing the disruption to plans you may have made for your own life.

Valli works with grandparents who find themselves acting in a parenting role, to support them while they manage the unique challenges this situation presents

Support may help with:

  • Feelings of stress, worry, resentment, anger, and guilt
  • Self-care and coping skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Dealing with children’s complex emotions
  • Creating a stable environment
  • Communication
  • Addressing challenging behaviours
  • Sensitive and effective discipline
  • Relationship and attachment difficulties
